What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a process whereby dry, electrostatically charged particles of powder are sprayed onto treated metal parts and then cured in an oven at 180 degrees and above, depending on the metal types. Powder coating is known to be much more durable than wet spray and normal paint and there are a variety of powder types to suit different jobs and requirements.

What materials can be powder coated?

Powder coating can be applied to the majority of metal surfaces, such as aluminium, steel, brass, copper, hot galvanised products and thermal zinc sprayed products.

How do I get my parts powder coated/refurbished?

Book in either online via our contact form, or give us a call on 01386 556613 and select option 1. Alternatively, pop in and see us in person for a quote. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always on hand to discuss your options.

Once booked in and the parts are with us, it will usually take around 1 week for completion, depending on the size and complexity of the job.

Do you offer a collection/delivery service?

Yes – we can collect and deliver your parts for a small fee, which depends on where you are situated. This can also be discussed via email, phone or when you pop in and see us.

What colours do you offer?

We stock a wide variety of colours, many of which can be found on the RAL chart. However, as there are so many colours on offer with the various ranges, there will always be some colours which we can’t offer. For any particular colours that we don’t have in stock, we can get you a same-day quote on these and for most, they can be delivered ‘next-day’. There are some colour ranges which are ‘made-to-order’ and these can be anything from 5-15 days for delivery.

What is the difference between matt, satin and gloss finishes?

There are multiple finishes available for each colour of powder, with the most popular being matt, satin and gloss. These are all in a smooth finish and the difference between them is the gloss level, with matt being 30%, satin (semi-gloss) being 50%-60% and gloss being around 70%. Gloss is the shiniest and matt is the least shiny, with semi-gloss being somewhere in between.

What other powder coating finishes are available?

As well as the standard smooth finishes, we also offer ripple and texture. If you are interested in a slightly coarser/textured finish, we can show you some samples to help you make your decision.

Will my refurbished parts look as good as new?

We can assure you that your parts will look markedly different to they did when they arrived with us. The finish depends highly on the condition and age of the parts, however, we will do all we can to ensure they look fantastic. The age and condition of the material means that some blemishes and defects within the metal are impossible to remove or repair.

How long does powder coating last?

Powder coating can last up to 20 years and even longer, but this depends on the conditions of the coating, as well as the conditions in which the coated item operates. Consistent use, frequent exposure to ultraviolet light, and constantly being in an outdoor setting are all things that can make the coating break down faster. However, there are options such as a powder coated zinc prime and also thermal zinc spray which can be applied to make the coating much more durable.

What sizes can you powder coat?

We have a variety of different coating facilities and ovens, ranging from an on line track system, to a 6.8 metre long oven, with various sizes in between. We can coat the smallest of items, up to items as large as 6.5 metres in length, 2.3 metres wide and 2.2 metres high.

Can you powder coat on site?

Unfortunately, due to the curing process, we cannot powder coat away from our factory. All parts that require powder coating will have to be here at our facility to enable us to carry out the work.

Does powder coating stop rust?

Powder coating can stop rust and corrosion and is a great way to stop oxidation and rusting. However, if the parts are already rusty before coating, this will need to be removed via degreasing or grit blasting as coating over the rust will only mask what is fundamentally corroding metal. The zinc prime powder coat and hot zinc spray are both great options for preventing rusting.

Is powder coating safe?

Powder coating is environmentally safe and also considered a safer option than wet spraying and painting.

Can powder coating be removed?

As it is very durable, powder coating can only really be removed via bead blasting or chemical stripping. However, we have a pyrolysis oven which is a slow burning process over a number of hours, which slowly burns the paint from mainly steel parts, which makes the blasting process much easier and takes some of the ferocity away to ensure metals remain intact.

For aluminium parts, we have a chemical stripping facility which slowly strips the paint from the parts before the blasting process.

Does powder coating scratch easily?

No – powder coating does not scratch, chip or fade easily and is much more durable and tough than conventional paint and wet spray.

Can powder coated surfaces be re-powder coated?

Whilst it is sometimes fine to coat over surfaces which have already been powder coated, we would always advise to have them stripped and blasted for the best results before coating again. Often, if the coated part is smooth and fresh, coating over the top will not cause many issues. However, if the part has been handled, moved, knocked etc, this can all impact the final finish.
